N95 Problems, Repairs and Fixes

Updated: 08 FEB 2012

The screen on my N95 became faulty and needed to be replaced and in the process of trying to find out what was wrong i came across a Fixes that might help people.
If you have found some useful fix's let me know and we can use this space to help others. Opening up your phone will invalidate your warranty and any repairs are done at your own risk if you are unsure i recommend just take it to a Nokia repair centre!

Opening up your Phone will invalidate your warranty!

1. N95 Screen Ribbon Problem
Many people have had problems with their N95 screen, which can invert in colour, appear upside down, the colors can also appear distorted with high pinks greens and finally a multi coloured noise speckle.
The N95 screen is attached to the phone by a Ribbon, on my phone i had to replace the whole screen (with ribbon) but for some people reconnecting the ribbon maybe all that is needed.

My Tips for removing Slider cover
I tried to reset the ribbon but found that it didn't entirely cure my problem , So i took it to a Nokia repair centre who did it free of charge. But in the process i found some useful tips for removing N95 covers.

A) The Four Screws are located on the underside of the top slider. you will need a Torx6 screwdriver to remove them.(Image 1)
B) To remove the Top Slider cover it helps to gently push one edge inwards as you lift the cover off then push then do the same to the other side. (Image 2)
C) To lift the Button Panel put a small screwdriver in the top righthand corner and pull back.(Image )

D) The ribbon is the gold like coloured strip and is connected by a Clip which lifts up from the bottom, as Spyda says the clip will move 180 degrees.
E) Now the screen can be removed and replaced or reset.

2. N95 High Pitch Noise Fix.

Well after looking through forum and forum. I realize that the high pitch noise is very common among n95 users and many have send back a few times and still have to same high pitch noise unfix. so instead of sending mine I decited to find out what the problem is myself and found out that it was the screen that is making noise when ever the light turn on (try putting your ear to the back on the screen when you open it, that is where the high pitch come from). So here is what i've done to get rid of the noise. more. . .

3. Fix loose slider

Basically this modification consists of compressing the nylon grooved slider-rail by a fraction, which is all that's needed in even the loosest slider.

The nylon moulding with the groove that locates the sliding rail of the top screen is held in place by a metal bracket on each side of the phone. The following instructions detail how to access this bracket, remove it, modify it and replace it. more . . .
or another basic way here (In Italian)

4. Microphone not working during a call?

Saw this and thought it might be useful.
I’ve seen a few people post on forums to say their microphone appears to be dead when making a call.
A temporary fix until new firmware is released is to turn on the loudspeaker and then switch back
to microphone mode.

This seems to give the phone the kick it needs to get the mic functional.
Currently the problem seems to be isolated to the 10.0.0.18 firmware.

5. Contact name not showing when your phone rings?

There is a simple fix to this particular problem.
On the Nokia N95 (and other Nokia’s) when you have an identical contact in phone memory and also on the SIM card the phone isn’t able to successfully display the contact name when the phone rings.
Delete one of the contacts and you should get the display name back.

6. Unable to play MP3’s or any music files

Some people have reported problems with a corrupted music folder that wont play sounds/music files. There is a solution and it involves tracking down the \Private\100012a5 on the memory card. The file causing all the problems is named something like DBS_101FE031_mcv7.mpd

The simple solution here is to delete the entire \Private\100012a5 folder. You could try just deleting the offending index file, but no guarantee’s as to how that will work.
After you have deleted/removed, be sure to go into music player and refresh your music selection so it can rebuild the index.

7. TV Out - Picture won’t display correctly

If you have a problem with your TV picture out not working properly (rolling or in black and white) on your N95, try this.

Tools
- Settings
- General
- Enhancement
- TV out

Try changing TV System from PAL -> NTSC and vice versa.
You should be rewarded with a more stable picture.

8. Multimedia key not working

If the multimedia key on your N95 has stopped working, you can fix it by doing a simple restart of the phone. Failing this, a hard reset should definitely do the trick.

One reason for this happening is a bug in the clock application, specifically with the recurring alarm. If you set a recurring alarm, once it has activated, the key will no longer be working.
There is also speculation that using photographs taken by the user with the N95 as the background in the multimedia menu, then deleting them, also triggers the bug, but this is yet to be proven.

9. N95 Audio Hiss Fix
I've been chatting to some people who have been having hissing issues through their headset when using their N95’s. I was confused as A LOT of people complained of this, yet my phone didn't seem to have the problem.

After some thinking, a light bulb went off in my head and I realised that I had turned Keypad tones off, as I dont like my phone to beep each time I touch it. Sure enough, when I turned my keypad tones to any level above OFF, the phone would hiss in my ears.

So just a heads up, that this MAY be a fix for the hissing coming from peoples phones. Turn your keypad tones off!

10. #HotKey Fix with Firmware ver.12 Original source: N95 Best Tips and tricks
The #key on most Symbian 60 Phones would switch the phone between the General and Silent modes when held down. Many N95 users found that their phone #key didn't work in this way including mine.
There was a lot of talk about different manufacturing locations being the reason which were later disproved, but i am glad to see that with the Firmware version12 this feature is now working on my phone.

11.
Hacking your N95
Firstly i would like to thank TonyJ for highlighting this Feature to me.
It is possible to hack your N95 to:
*Allow unsigned applications
*Allow old applications
*Change default standby applications as well as many other things.
Nokia have known about these issues and released some firmware updates just to close the loop holes allowing people to do this.
Hacking your phone is not an easy process but there are step by step guides offered by many websites. I have avoided hacking after trying a few early hacks that didn't work properly.
But for those who love to customise there phone or who want to avoid the unsigned .sis process this could just what you want.
Here is a YouTube Tutorial which gives you a good idea of what is possible .
Here is a link to Phutse's Weblog where there are tutorials and downloads for tools to hack your phone. The tests were originally on N82 & N73 but they were found to work on N95 too, but this does depend on the firmware you have.

Please Note that Hacking your phone is not easy and could cause problems, that is why i didn't mention it before, You do this at your own risk.
If you have any questions on Hacking please contact the websites directly, I cannot help you on this subject. Enjoy your Hacking !!

When i Turn on my n95 it just illuminates the screen but doesn't actually come on. i have tried removing the battery and trying again but it just does the same thing. However after a while when i just leave it charging, it comes on again only to go back to the screen flashing/no display mode...I don't know if this makes any sense...please help

This sounds similar to the early problems i had with my screen. Eventually i had to have the screen replaced (free of charge).
Early firmware versions 10 and 11 did have problems with n95 rebooting for no reason but if you have blank screen it sounds you will need a new screen.
I tried to reset the screen ribbon but in the end i needed a new screen as the connection was damaged, i would take it to your nearest Nokia repair centre and ask them.

hi there sjc
firstly thanks for all the info

the problem i have with my n95 is that after upgrading to the latest firmware (12.0.013) last week it has had 2 major problems

first is that the names do not show up on sms but it still works fine on calls, there is also no number which were doubled up

the bigger problem is that most sms does not come through to my phone!!!
i need to turn off and then turn on and after it has found the network it will recieve sms

any help or directions would help me greatly as this is a big frustration

i have downloaded and reinstalled the latest firmware 2 more times but no change

thanks!

when i switch off & switch on my cell, every time i have 2 enter date & time..
wat should i do??

Re Phone date & Time Reset on Reboot:
Some people have found that Recharging the phone battery Fully sorted the problem.
It maybe that the internal phone memory (for date and time)is not functioning correctly quote from person who had same problem:
"actually, now that we charged the phone fully, it stopped reseting the clock/date. I guess the internal clock battery had to be charged."

Unknown said...

Great post.

I, too, am experiencing the date/time request on boot-up, however it gets better (worse)...

While it was mildly annoying at first, I now find that more often than not, if I enter the current date, I get the message "Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer." (Not Nokia, you'll note!)

It _seems_ that if I accept the default date/time, it is more likely to boot, and then I have to go into the clock settings and update it manually. Guess what I've got as #1 on my active standby apps now? :-)

It wouldn't be such a problem if the thing didn't run out of juice most days and need the battery changed. (Charging on the go is not an option for me at the moment...)

Just for the record, I also find the in-built maps app rarely finds any satellites these days, even in open space. But I didn't buy it for the GPS, so it's less of an issue. Google maps and even sports tracker occasionally have more success, but not much. It used to work fine.

All these problems started with the V12 software, and are still there after updating to V20, so it sounds like hardware to me.

Still, I love the little purple turd. The web server integration is mind-blowing.

I'm also having the problem with a date and time issue - Vodafone this side is telling me that it's a software issue and i need to update the firmware.

I've manually updated the firmware with the usb cable and the issue is still around :(

Re Anon Debranding:When you debrand your N95 you will still be on the same network, the debranding just removes some product logos (not operator)and importantly changes the product code so that you can get the latest firmware.
On the Deranding Tutorial page there are some useful comments with tips people found.
Debranding Tutorial
Another Guide
You might find something useful on one of these sites above, also reboot your phone before you start the debranding, that will give you max.RAM memory that helps.

to SJC...cheers for that but sorted the prob of updating, put a clean install of NSU on a different pc...straight in!! Only prob now is that when i open up the phone into media mode,i just get the normal screen on display. Any ideas on this one? Good to see that this site is alive n well!!

I've recently bought an n95 off ebay. Used it from Monday and just found out that ever since its been connecting to internet roughly every 15 mins. I have a Virgin sim but was originally on Orange network and its through the orange web its connecting. Any idea what I need to do? I've tried loads but just keeps doing it and its costing me a small fortune.

Anonymous said...

when phone connects to internet every 15 minutes, you have to do this ( I think):

open the n95 webbrowser >
options > settings > feeds > automatic updates.

there you can change or put-off the
automatic webfeeds-updates

Hello sjc and other readers,

yesterdayevening I fell into a deep hole, and are still in it.

for about 1 1/2 weeks I was waiting with exitement on the new firmware voor n95 (sleeples nights:), and yesterday was the day.
But just when I was about to "go 4 it" the phone freezed and my only option was eventually to remove the battery.

Now when I start it up you see : nokia, but this logo disappears leaving nothing but a white screen with the backlight on. and you can only switch it off, by removing the battery.

I downgraded to a TORCH

my n95 has 2 problems, the first is that when i try to connect to the net it just goes back to the main screen, it did this previously but a hard reset cured it, the other problem is that the * and 9 keys do not work for some strange reason so i cant do the hard reset anymore as i need the star key. any help would be great.

thanks

sjc said...

Re Hard Reset No Buttons:
Have you tried reinstalling the firmware via the "Nokia Software Updater". Then you wouldn't need to use the keys that don't work.
Even if i you have the latest firmware you should be able to reinstall as an option. Just go through the updater process and choose to reinstall.

Whenever I try to activate the DATA TRANSFER in my Nokia N95, there is a message ”UNABLE TO ACTIVATE DATA TRANSFER MODE. MEMORY CARD IS IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION\”, COMES. Please advise.

sjc said...

Re data transfer Mode error:
I would check to see if you are using a Theme from the memory card or if your Text messages are stored on the memory card.
Obviously there is some application using the memory card. I would check if this is still the same after a reboot before you have started your usual applications.
If you need more help email me.

hey there,i not sure how to put a gif image onto my n95,tried through lifeblog but gifs do not appear when i try to import them from pc,any tips?

sjc said...

Re GIF images: GIF images are supported by the N95, i do remember having problems with large size gifs, being too big for the memory to open.
The easiest way to get images into your phone is via usb cable.
I have tested a few gif's and png's and they all seem to work.
I would suggest, Check the size and re-save the image before transferring to your phone.

hi sjc, i need your advice.... i have a problem on my n95. the lcd is totally black out. and i want to try resetting the lcd ribbon. but when i was opening the n95 2 of of the t6 screws are worn out. is there a possible or any alternative way to open it?

sjc said...

Re Screws bunt: Well i really recommend taking it to a Nokia Service Center, but if you want to do it yourself, i would try a normal screw driver that is slightly bigger and hope that you can get it to turn!! its desperate measures but it might work.
There is no other way of removing the front cover that i know.

My N95 was great until about six weeks ago. Now, whenever I try and do any kind of file transfer to the phone - music, for example - in Windows Explorer, it reboots after about 20 seconds.

Nokia's Music software (that comes with PC Suite) won't even boot up at all, so that isn't an option. A full re-install has solved nothing.

It's very frustrating as it means I can only copy music files that are very small, otherwise the phone 'times out', reboots, and I lose the connection and the download.

Any help greatly appreciated!

sjc said...

Re N95 Reboot problem: Even my N95 automatically reboots from time to time,
I would avoid the nokia music software and use the Phone browser located in the "My Computer" explorer window, that might help the transferring of music.
I would check the free space, the memory card may have some errors and old files that could be cleaned up.
I would recommend getting the latest firmware updates and see what background programs are running, which are probably causing a conflict.

hey sjc, i have i question, i recently saw a gentleman using the iphone "touch screen" program on the N95. i believe that he is just using a bluetooth keyboard, but after looking closer to the youtube videohe is actually touching the screen...is there a program out there for it, and if so dont you think nokia is copyrighting the touch screen?
and if it is true do you think it would be a good program to use for the n95?
and the second question is there another program that is faster for the standalone GPS for the n95 instead of nokia maps, i recently use a hacked tom tom program on the n95 it worked but once i shut down the gps and tryed to use it again i could not get a signal

Anonymous said...

Great blog, loving all there is about my N95 except the hotkey# does not switch from general to silent and vice versa. Its an orange phone with firmware V20.
Any ideas why its not functioning?

sjc said...

Re # Key not switching profiles: Originally my #key didn't work but when i upgraded to v.12 it started working, so i am surprised on v.20 its still not working for you.
I do remember doing a "soft reset" (details on my page) which might just get it working, its worth trying that, with a soft reset you dont loose all your applications etc.

sjc said...

Re wolfie: Nokia are working on touch screens for future models,
Those youtube touchscreen videos are mostly fake.
As for tom tom or other sat nav i cant recommend cracks . . . there are no free sat nav systems, i would stick to nokia maps 2 and plot routes and use the voice feature.

Re ninad: Re Date and Time reset:
This is hardware problem, where the Internal Date/Time battery is not charging properly.

Some people have found this Simple Fix to work:
Get the phone to use the "Operator time" rather than asking you whenever it needs this information. The setting is here:
Tools->Settings->General->Date and Time->Network Operator Time, set it to Auto-Update.
It is possible that other N series phones are having similar problems, but i would not change this small internal battery yourself, take it back to service center and ask them to fix it, is the best idea.

Hi there, excellent site mate! could you help me? My N95 wont scale down photos to send by MMS (operater settign are updated and ok) and also the "Edit" option on the photo menue is gone. Iv already installed the latest software upgrade etc and am at a loss!

sjc said...

Franco Uk Edit images:
If you save the Image from MMS into gallery, you can then edit the image including resizing.
I checked my phone and it does work.
If you still have problems, you could try a reboot or Soft Reset on Main page (part 2).

Franco said...

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. however I cant resize or edit the photo, even in "gallery" because the 'edit' option in the 'options' listing for any picture is no longer there. the software for it seems to have vanished. I cant do any of the things i used to a week ago like resize, change contrast etc etc. i will try the soft reset as its my only option. If you have any other ideas feel free to post. im still lost! cheers mate

Franco said...

Iv'e just completed the soft reset, and still no editing option, and MMS creation still wont automatically resize a picture to send. guess i'll just have to live without it!

sjc said...

Re Franco: Well you tried, its probably best to transfer the image out of the phone and edit with photoshop etc it would be better quality.
Hopefully future firmware updates will rectify this issue.

I have a 1gb memory card that I bought last week. I used it last week and recorded quite a few videos which was fine as I was able to watch them the following day.

However, just a few days later I noticed that the videos were no longer in the gallery. I checked my memory card details and it said 400mb used however it had not allocated any memory to videos / images etc . .

I removed my memory card without selecting to and I read elsewhere that this can cause damage to files which I am assuming has happened in my case. However, is there anyway of recovering these files? Really hope I dont lose them as they were taken on holiday.

Thanks

sjc said...

Re Memory card problem: Hopefully you can get the videos back.
If you remove the memory card and insert into a PC or connect the phone via "Data transfer mode" then go to "My Computer" on your PC, Now right click on the SDCard and select "Properties" then select the "Tools" Tab and then click on "Check Now" in the Error-checking section, a dialogue box will appear tick both boxes including " . . attempt recovery of bad sectors"
Run the Error Check and hopefully the videos will be found. i would look on the memory card whilst connected to the PC, to check if they are visible.
This should help :)
If you want more help email me

hi i have an nokia n95 and whenever i receive a text message through to my phone it never shows on the screen or makes any message tone it goes directly to my inbox, so i never know when i have had a text of my friends. I would be very grateful if you know the solution to this. Thankyou

sjc said...

Re laincrib: My people have had the problem of no message alerts.
There are a few things you could check.
1) Check the amount of messages in your inbox (is it full)
2)Check your profile settings and check "Alert for" and "message alert tone"
3)Check to see if you are running any additional software that maybe causing a conflict. Reboot your phone to see if the problem still happens when nothing extra is running.
4)If you are storing Inbox on memory card check your card is working correctly remove/errorcheck on PC etc
5) If none of the above make any difference then a "Soft Reset" or Firmware update is my best suggestion. Details on N95 BTips PT2 section 24
All the best, SJC

hopefully you're still checking in on this blog, as the n95 has about run its course. my audio/cam zoom in/out buttons have stopped working, but the gallery and camera buttons work fine. is there any way to increase volume besides those buttons? if not, how may i fix it?

sjc said...

Re Lex vol. button: As you mention the N95 has been around for a while now so the button failure maybe more physical than software related.
You can adjust the ringing volume from Personalisation/Tones/Ringing volume but otherwise i dont know of any another way.
If you think its software related then upgrading firmware or "Soft reset" would be a good idea.

I have recently just updated my N95 to the 30.0.15 firmware. However on the front screen the clock and battery meter etc do not appear and are replaced by a white block. Any ideas on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

sjc said...

Re V.30 firmware problem: I did not have any problems with firmware update, I would check to see if any other applications are conflicting with the idle screen, Did it appear that way when first rebooted?
If it did then i would reinstall the firmware via the Nokia Software Updater, there is an option to re-install firmware.
Lets hope that will sort it out.

Anonymous said...

thanks for the reply man. unfortunately, i can't update you on my status as i have yet to follow thru on my plan to update my phone's firmware. but i'll update as soon as i do. one last thing tho. i'd like to shrink my pics since i've transferred them on my pc. but my phone doesn't seem to have that feature anymore. v21 n95-1. i am using a 2gb RiDATA microSD. my theory is that i have to use a nokia microSD to get the transfer and memory feature back?

sjc said...

Re Lex Resizing images on N95: You mentioned you cannot resize images via the gallery on v.21, The "Resize" feature did work on v.21 and is still available on v.30. So there maybe some conflict in your memory card or some software problem.
I have checked and the resize feature works fine on my N95-1. You could use Adobe photoshop on a PC to edit images before transferring to phone or when copying from the phone. Its an idea?
All the best

Re Camera Problem: There are a few basic things that can cause this type if problem
1) Application Conflicts
2) Software Malfunction
3) Hardware Damage

If you have some other applications running , i would turn them off then restart your phone to see if the problem persists.
If you still have the problem then you could do a "Soft reset" which will reload your software and keep new applications, BUT you will need to restart your personal settings etc, details on soft reset in section 24 on Main page Part2!
If you still have problems you could reinstall the firmware or do a "Hard Reset" which is the same as "Flashing" your phone, you will loose all data on the phone memory!!
It maybe caused by faulty camera/ shutter etc in that case its better to take it to a Nokia Repair Center.
I would give the first 2 ideas a go, and hope it sorts it out :)

I love my N95 but never got the search function to work, not even with today's current firmware. So if I need to find a note (ie my bank account number) I need to scroll through!!

I wished the camera would turn on the GPS and geotag my photos too incidentally, Sportstracker kind of does it, but why doesnt Nokia do it (batt. life?)... Anyway, one issue at a time!

Cheers!

I have just had my Nokia N95 replaced and have put in my old memory card. In my applications I have afew games that i installed and are showing on my new phone from the memory card but wont delete. Please can you help with this? Also, I stupidly managed to delete my contacts after selecting "restore from card" in the memory application. Is there any way of retrieving anything ive lost?

sjc said...

Re Old Applications on Memory Card:
If you installed games or themes onto your memory card and then wiped the phone memory, then you will have traces left on the memory card.
It is not likely that you will be able to use the games, you would need the original installers.
There are 2 ways to remove the traces, the easiest way is to:
1)Reinstall the game or theme, as it will think it is still there and ask to over write the original.
2) I wrote about in N95 Best T&T Section23 basically you need to delete certain files and folders from your Memory card when connected to a PC. There are lots of details and screenshots in Section23 and two versions.
That should sort it out :)

sjc said...

Re Souvik N95-1: Well it could be a number of things but Rather than trying to test the phone's performance and RAM usage i would recommend simply updating the firmware. I always upgrade to the latest firmware, version30 now has Auto-rotate for N95 which is well worth having.
The latest firmware for N95-1 is v.30. If you press *#0000# on your phone it will tell you what firmware version you have, even new N95-1 in the UK are still coming with v.14!! (That still have #key problems!)
On my main page N95 Best T&T there is a tutorial on how to get the very latest firmware by debranding your phone or you could just download the free Nokia Software Updater and get the newest version available to your specific phone.

Hello, I have only a big problem with my Nokia N95-8Gb. It's the third time the message ''not enough memory to receive message(s)'' appears. I don't send a lot of e-mails / sms. If I send a lot, I usually delete them from the phone after a few days. I don't store more than 20 messages.
I checked the SIM messages (Messages/Options/SIM Messages), but it's empty.

Last time I had to wait kinda 24 hours to see the message...disappear. Well, it disapeared alone and I had nothing else to delete.

Now I use a lot MSN messenger on my N95. It never stores any conversation on the phone or phone memory. When I leave Messenger, I have to close the connection from the connection manager. So far so good. But..if the message 'not enough memory to receive messages' appears, then it may be because of Messenger ? Or because I receive sometimes more than 10 e-mails/day? I do not know what else to do to fix this issue. Thanks.

sjc said...

Re Marius : To check Message Inbox use Messaging /inbox. You said you only keep 20 messages so that should be ok.
I am not sure if "not enough memory" is referring to RAM memory or hard drive memory space, so i would restart your phone to gain back any lost RAM memory.
A friend of mine had a operator problem where the believed his inbox was full so they wouldn't send him messages, he had to completely delete his inbox contents, that worth a try.
I think it could be RAM memory if you use MSN a lot as that will drain you 8GB. you could use a program like PyRestart to quickly restart your phone.
Hope this helps :)

hi sjc,

I have N95 8Gb, and was facing problems with steaming videos (such as youtube's) that I was trying to solve to no avail. I use my Home WLAN and am sure the settings for that are right since I can access the internet from the phone, it's just that the live streaming that is giving me a problem (am using v15)...

can you help me with that?

many thanks mate :)

sjc said...

Re YouTube streaming: I did a feature a while back on Youtube in section 8 on the main page. There are quite a few youtube applications around but i found the basic Web browser worked well on my N95 less break up. Using Wlan is the best way as the signal is better.
You should be able to get Youtube working even if it breaks up half way through.
let me know some more details if you are still having problems.

Would anyone know why my music files do not show up when I try to assign a song as a ringtone for a contact?

I used to able to do it, but all I get now is the options of "download" or "default"

Anonymous said...

My N95 won't let me receive picture messages but will let me send them, and reason why?

sjc said...

Re Picture messaging: Nokia has a very useful page on Picture messaging settings HERE
You can get nokia to Send the settings to your phone which may help any small bug.
You do need to send one message to activate the system, but that wasn't your problem.
I would download the MMS settings via the website and restart your phone and don't start any additional applications encase they are causing a conflict.
It should fix the problem.

Hi i don't know if you would class this as a problem but when i receive a message it doesn't store them in order you received them like the last message you received at the top they are all over the place i find this really annoying is there anyway to sort this?

sjc said...

Re Message list: Well lets hope it's just a simple settings issue. If you go to messaging /Inbox/ Options/ Sort By. Then select Date.
If you have already done that then it sounds like a small bug in your phone a soft reset should fix it. Details for resets are on my main page Part 2 section 24!! Back up data first!

I managed to round off 1 of the 4 screws when going to change the front cover on my N95. I've just read on another forum that its possible to cut a small slice in the top off the screw and undo with a small flat head screwdriver. Any ideas on what i could use to make the tiny cut? Another idea was to soulder a small screw to the T5 screw then undo. Has anybody used either of these methods or got any other ideas?

sjc said...

Re damaged screws: I would not recommend the solder T5 ideas as the solder is not strong enough to hold the screws.
It is possible to use any screw driver, and now that you have a burred centre, i would try a small phillips screw driver, once it moves you should be able to move it by pure force.
If you are really brave you could try a very small pilot drill to make a cut as you mention to make a head, but it would require very very precise work. I would stick to trying different screw drivers.
I'm a "have a Go" kind of person, and i am lucky with manual stuff, i seem to derive some strange pleasure taking things apart, i re soldered my PC mouse yesterday :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks Sjc, i'll try some more screwdrivers and if i still cant budge it i'll try soldering as a last resort, i shall not be defeated haha. The bloke in my local phone shop reckoned the only way to get it off was by brute force and then he said the ribbon inside would be damaged and would cost £30 just to replace that. I think he was just trying it on. I'll let u know how i get on.

I recently completely changed my N95's cover to one of those black one's like the 8gb version as the original one was looking a little tiresome. This has resulted in a major loss of signal quality to my phone and was wondering if you oy anyone elso knows what I may have disturbed. Also after debranding my phone not long after these phones came out my TV out & audio out no longer work. Wondered if any one else has experienced these problems and knows of any fixes.

Dear Sir, I am actally having a problem from a day or two. My messages in inbox went preity much above the limit that is to about 2500. and i had not deleted any till my N95 started giving error of message sending failed. and the details it give is that " Genral Error: colse some application and try again." I have tried aproximately everything, from basic to some technical dealing with it. but still i have yet not been able to resolve this problem. I have tried from rebooting cell phone, from removing the sim and inserting different and checking, theat gave me the assurity that the problem is due to the mobile, rather than service. Message centre numbers are correct. Everything id fine but still i cant understand whats wrong with it!! and with that I have also tried soft reset. but ...
Please help me out

sjc said...

Re Text message error: As i understand it, you cannot send any text messages?
I assume you have deleted a large amount of the texts or at least backed up messages via PC Suite.
The delete all the inbox messages. Also take the battery out while the phone is still working (dont use switch key) as this can help reset the info with service provider.
You have tried a soft reset, which should have fixed most small software issues. I think the message center still thinks your inbox is full, it happened to a friend, even though his box had only a few messages.
You could try downloading message settings from nokia HERE
I would also call your provider again and get them to reset/Clear any additional messages.
I hope one of these helps

Hi there! Great site many thanks. Wondered if you could help me. When i want to view the gallery pictures its taking 1 - 2 mins to load. Have you got any ideas how i can fix this problem? I've got n95 8gb and just downloaded latest firmware but still not any better
Many thanks!

sjc said...

Re Slow gallery: It seems that N95 8GB does have a slow gallery image preview problem. Many people have noted this fault.
Nokia are aware of the issue. So hopefully in future firmware upgrades the gallery speed will be improved.
I don't have a N95 8GB to test. But i would back up the images on a PC. Obviously the less images the faster load time, so remove the less needed images. its worth testing the gallery with just a few images. If you are going to view photos on the phone only, then a resolution of 640x480 would be ok and help load times.
Nobody on the internet has seemed to find a fix, so have a play.
That the best i can offer :)

Hey sjc great blog. I got my n95 last october and since then have sent it for repair twice! first because of dead pixels on the screen and then someting went wrong with the software where it wouldn't go past the white nokia screen. Today i noticed dead pixels again, what should i do? should i send it for repair again and ask for another set or are these problems normal? BTW my phone's still under warranty

sjc said...

Re Anon N95 pixel problem : Quite simply i would take it back as it is under warranty and get a new one.
It doesn't mean the next one will have the same problem. See if they will upgrade to a N95 8GB :)

hey could you assist me how i could copy my messages from phone memory to card? I accidentally clocked no when it asked the first time now its not giving me the option....??
Thanks

sjc said...

Re Messages to memory card: The first time you change the default message location it asks if you want to move the messages after that it wont ask you again, as you have found out!
People who have used the memory card as default location for messages have found it slower to access than phone memory.
If you use the Nokia PC Suite to "back up" messages you should be able to select the memory card as a location to return messages. I haven't tested this but it should work. If you just want to save old messages i would use the PC suite and Copy/Save them into a folder on your memory card.

What i want to do is get my photo's and videos off my phone but as the screen is not working like it should i dont know what is where as i cant see it, is there any way that i can get the bits off my phone before i get a new one?
Any help really would be most gratefully recieved.

sjc said...

Re Anon & Mum-of-3 Nokia logo on screen: I would first remove the battery and restart the phone but i assume you have done that already.
If you just want to retrieve videos & pictures then connect the phone to a PC via USB cable in "PC suite mode" and you should be able to find most data especially if it was stored on the memory card.
If the data was stored on the memory card then you could also just remove the SD card an put it into a PC that has the correct slots.
If you want to reset your phone (you will loose data on the Phone memory) the you could try a hard reset using the Keys. There is a key combination which is used to hard reset the phone (similar to #*7370#). It is useful in some cases, for example when the phone cannot reboot. The trick is by switching off the phone then press and hold Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button for a couple of seconds.
I hope this answers both questions above, Lets hope it sorts it out! All the best, sjc

Re Anon firmware deleted? : I dont think your firmware is deleted but clearly there is a problem. The easiest solution would be take it to your nearest Nokia Repair center. It may not be possible to fix this yourself,
If you want to try more ideas, well you seem to have tried most of them. I would charge up the battery, restart the phone and try the green key reset, then try reinstalling the firmware via the Nokia software Updater (USB cable) i know you said it can't recognize your phone but i would keep trying.
I did have a similar problem when my firmware update went wrong (faded nokia logo only) but after taking out the battery and restarting the phone it was ok.
I hope this helps :) sjc

Re Anon personal ringtone problem: There can be a problem if you have a large amount of songs on your memory card. To fix this put the ringtones you want onto your Phone memory, then refresh the music library, then eject the memory card. The song will now appear in the list and you can assign it as a ringtone. You can now re-insert the memory card.

What Should I Do ??

sjc said...

Re D-Pad colour:The D-pad is metal coloured plastic. So i assume the surface has worn away a bit. You can replace it yourself, you will need a special torx screwdriver to remove the screws. The 4 screws are visible on the back, when you slide the front panel ScreenShot

Hi SJC, I have lots of questions/problems with my N95 8gb that i hope you can help me with:

ist: i just updated my firmware to the latest, how can i remove the "share online" icon, which turned into garbage, from my screen? I deleted the ikbis and vox, then the 'share online' icon turned to garbage which is still in my main screen.
2nd: how do i delete my mailbox?
3rd: why cant i connect to my mailbox when sending emails, and my emails to be sent always end up in que in my outbox.
4th: How do i properly set the 'email setting' of a mailbox?
5th: I cannot anymore upload photos and videos to my facebook like i can before. Somewhere along the way when i still had the old version,it stopped the ability to send to my facebook.
6th: some of my photos and got deleted by itself or by accident when i still had the old version, can i still recover them even if i updated my firmware? How to prevent photos & videos from being deleted automatically?
7th: Can i stop my mobile Lifeblog from saving all my pics, videos and messages so i would not run out of memory at times?
8th: Lastly, can my mobile get spyware or virus when internet surfing, using bluetooth or downloading anything? What are the signs that my mobile is infected and is there a freeware anti virus for it?
Sorry to bother you with all these, hope its not too much. Thanks for your time and more power!

sjc said...

Re Anon Many Questions: The firmware Update would have wiped a lot of settings, so you may need to redo a few.
Ok lets get started :)
1)shortcuts try KnowCustomize
2)Mailbox is a part of email so i would follow this guide to set it up KnowEmail
3)Hopefully once your email is set up this will go away.
4)Answered in Q2
5) I would delete the facebook application from "App.Mgr." and get a new one there could be some internal features that need resetting KnowFacebook.
6)I would back up any photos or videos onto a PC. There is some software,Not free, but it can't guarantee to find them, ForumLink
7)Personally i dont use Lifeblog, so i am not sure but here is a tutorial which might help, KnowLifeblog
8)I wouldn't be too concerned about spyware/virus from your phone, when you did a firmware upgrade is would have wiped your phone memory clean. You can get some anti virus for S60 but i wouldn't bother, to put you mind at rest 3-LibAV_info
I only have a N95 which has an internal & external memory making it a little different to 8GB, so hopefully this will help you sort out ur phone. All the best sjc.

Re nazish memory card: i used to have a 4GB memory card in my N95 so the size shouldn't be an issue.
What i would do is Error check the card using a PC. If you put the corrupt 2GB back into the phone connect via USB cable and connect via "Mass Storage". On your PC, Go to "Computer" select Properties and choose "Error check". Hopefully it will sort it out.
You could also just save all the pictures etc onto a PC and just delete all the data on the card.
I hope this helps

Memory card is in use by messaging Application. Change the selected memory in messaging settings first" I dun know wat to do. Which messaging application is this? as no messages were being sent at that moment.

hello. my memory card was doing problems. I tried to sort out by the method U haven given. after doing all that I did a blunder. I pull out the USB cable. now my gallery is not being open. music player is opening but gallery is not.wat should i do?

Re Nazish & Anon Memory card:
You could of course take the memory card out of the phone and put it directly into a PC but you would need a MicroSD Card adapter/reader, Its just easier to do it while in the phone.
Nazish, I would check to see if you are storing your Text messages onto your MCard or phone memory. You can find out from Messaging>settings. Otherwise it likely to be a third party application you might have installed, switch it off and try again.
Anon, I would definitely take the MCard out of the phone, Then restart the phone, and then insert the card while the phone is on. Then i would connect again to a PC and start the error check process again (tick both boxes on windows popup to attempt to retrieve files)
My Dads nokia lost its pictures recently, who knows why?, but after following the above process i was able to get them back, It really can work

Hi. My N95 started telling me I had memory problems. I deleted all my texts but the problem is still there. Also, and more importantly my photos have disappeared. Is their any way of retrieving them off the phone, they are not showing up anywhere :-(

sjc said...

Re Anon Memory problems: Memory pop ups can be misleading, As 'Not enough memory close some applications' refers to RAM rather than Phone memory space, if it said something similar you probably have too many applications open, you can check by holding down the Menu key.
I'm not sure which memory your phone message referred to but generally Text messages are quite small and wont gain much space, installed applications take up far more space so it can be useful to install them to the memory card.
If your Photos were store on your memory card i would do an 'Error check' using a PC. If you connect the phone via USB cable to a PC and choose "Mass Storage" mode. On your PC, Go to "Computer" select your Memory card, then Properties and choose "Error check". Hopefully it will find some photos if they are still there.
I hope this helps :)

hi there sjc...i need your help on how to fix the Bluetooth of my nokia n95 8gb...after i upgraded its firmware the bluetooth doesnt work anymore...please help me on this...thanks in advance..

sjc said...

Re Grayback0703 bluetooth: I would try to "reinstall" the current firmware as you can't downgrade firmware. There is a feature for reinstalling on the OVI suite.
If that doesn't work i would "hard reset" your phone which will loose all data, 3rd party apps etc. Hard Reset (*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten. The phone will ask you a confirmation and enter a security code (12345 by default).
I hope this helps! otherwise i would take it to a Nokia Repair Center.

First of all thanks to all
Left selection key of n95 in not working, when it is pressed menu options blinks and disappear, when a call is over automatically mp3 file start play.
when key 7 is press to type p patd is typed.

sjc said...

Re Mehendi keypad problem : There is a few things you can try but it sounds like a hardware issue to me.I would try a Soft reset (*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc). The phone will ask you a confirmation, enter a security code (12345 by default).
If that doesnt help a Hard Reset (*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten. The phone will ask you a confirmation and enter a security code (12345 by default).
I would recommend taking it to a nokia repair centre as it may not be possible to fix without a new keypad.

sjc said...

Re Salaa Ribbon problem: This sounds like a hardware issue and i would take it to a repair shop, or Nokia repair center.
If you want to try something you could try a Soft Reset or Hard reset details on the Main page in section 5.
If you have tried the resets and its still the same you can be sure its a Hardware problem.

Hello ppl,I am having problem with my front camera(0.3Mpix). My phone fell from the bed and now my camera does not work.Sometimes,it's says: error occured, try to reboot your device. tried but did not help. Sometimes, when I press the middle button to try to take a photo I can hear the sound but the photo is not saved and I can not see anything on my displey. What could be the problem?

sjc said...

Re Anon camera issue: I would expect that there is some loose connection inside the phone, which will require taking it to a repair center.
If you want to try a soft reset in the hope it may fix it, have a look at the main page section 5 for further details.

sjc said...

Re Jibin firmware: I once had that problem and rebooting after taking out the battery fixed it. But i realise you have tried that.
I assumed you have already tried the basics like reinstalling via OVI suite.
You could try the 3 button restart it is useful in some cases, for example when the phone cannot reboot. The trick is by switching off the phone then press and hold Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button for a couple of seconds.
Otherwise i would suggest taking it to a nokia repair centre as the software is corrupted.
All the best :)

Whenever I try to activate the GPS in my Nokia N958Gb, there is a message ”Searching for GPS Satellites”, COMES,then another message comes :"GPS not available". Please advise. Thanks

sjc said...

Re Hossam GPS: The N95 GPS is not as quick as later nokia models. For best signal use the phone outside, open the slider and hold upside down.
The follow the guide on GPS page in section 1)GPS Data.
It usually takes over 1 minute to get a signal.
I hope this helps

put a new lcd screen in n95 and it worked for a couple of days then turned it on yesterday and blank pale blue screen.
Tried resetting ribbon.

sjc said...

Re Ei ribbon: I can only suggest taking it to a nokia repair center. If you got new screen then its not likely to be that, connection maybe , could check to see if its loose. Of course you could try firmware upgrade but it sounds like hardware.

my n95 8gb doesn't turn on, when i disassembled it, after many trials of turning it on, luckily, it turned on. after an hour, it turned off, i thought that my battery was drained but, i tried to disassemble it again then tried to turn it on without the main casing, nothing happened. can i just take it to the repair shop or try to fix it myself?? please help me.

So happy to still see an N95 support forum open!

My N95 got wet. I left it to dry for a few days. Now, it turns on and functions, but the screen is very very dim (unusable) and has lots of missing pixels. Other than that, it seems to be fine.

Do you think a screen replacement would solve this?

Thanks!
John

sjc said...

Re Dustine: I am impressed that you took it apart in the first place. But i would take it to a repair centre, they may need to replace some parts.

sjc said...

Re John:It is impossible to say 100% that a new screen will fix it but I would get a new screen if it was me. Lets face it its the most likely solution to this problem.

Noobs, you don't defrag flash memory. You don't have any understanding about what defrag is used for and how any type of flash memory works.

I don't even like to start explain why, just google it please?

Re Anon Defrag: Thanks for the Advice on Flash Defrag. I have removed that section.

hi! my higher keys doesn't work, only numbers and * #. please help me cuze i can't update my firmwar, yes key doesn't work.

sjc said...

Hi Yldiz
It sounds like a hardware issue, but if you want to try a reboot you can use the alternative: To hard reset the phone (similar to #*7370#). It is useful in some cases, for example when the phone cannot reboot. The trick is by switching off the phone then press and hold Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button for a couple of seconds.
This is a hard reboot which means you will loose some data. you could also connect your phone via usb to a PC and update firmware that way.
I hope this helps :)

I cant see the captured images in images and video folder in media.....

sjc said...

Re jintu john
When you open the Images & Videos Folder the library should automatically refresh. If you cannot see any images etc i would Remove the memory card (if images are stored on them) while the phone is on and reinsert the card.
If this doesn't make any difference i would try a Soft reset (*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc). The phone will ask you a confirmation, enter a security code (12345 by default)
Hope this helps

Hello

I am very new to this forum and not sure if the problem I am facing has been attended.

I am having problem with my Nokia N95 8GB. All of a sudden, when I was trying to save the number in my contact list, the numbers & names in my contact list started to disappear which took me by surprise.

Not knowing what else to do, I just switched off my phone and after switching it on, all the contacts have disappeared and when i try to retrieve the contacts I get to see a blank screen with the only option of exit.

Now, I am just not able to retrieve the contacts. Tried the soft reset method but it did not work. Please help me if you have any clue to what happened and how I can retrieve all those contacts mainly because I neither have a back up nor can easily connect to all those in my contact list.

sjc said...

Re Anon Contacts Gone: This issue has not been addressed before here. It sounds like you have a software problem.
To retrieve your contacts i would try using the Nokia Suite. Your contacts are usually saved in the "other" folder which is accessed via file manager also you may still have contacts saved on your Sim card. To add contacts from sim: Menu> contacts>options>sim contacts> sim directory.
It sounds like you may need to do a Hard reset to get your phone working properly again, but as this will wipe your memory i would try the Nokia suite first to retrieve your contacts.
I hope this helps

Is it possible to Install a Symbian V3.2 OS in my Nokia N95?!
Also, is it possible to replace a Nokia N95 8gb screen with my usual screen.?!
And lastly. Is it possible to change the RAM and the PROCESSOR in my Nokia N95?!
Thnx..

sjc said...

Re Leizer: The N95 was always known to be hard on Battery life and a little under powered.
Updates in Firmware helped improve speed and Ram use. Upgrading the RAM and possessor maybe possible but i would not recommend it. If you are really keen to make these changes i would take it to a Nokia repair centre and ask them on the possibilities.
As for Symbian 3.2 and original screen, it is something that i dont know will work.
Sorry i can't be of more help but these questions are best directed to a Nokia Repair Centre.

i have N95 memory card one .
recently i have repaired main camera and microspeaker .
i just wanna know if updating it from firmware 12v to newer one will it that affect my previous repaired problems ???

sjc said...

re Priyank: Well i theory there should be no problem with the firmware update but there is no guarantee that a problem will occur.
It depends on whether your earlier problems were software or hardware (damaged camera)
The decision is yours but if it was me i would risk it.

i am having problem of 3G in nokia n95.

N one more thing, i hav problem of ribbon on my n95. Does that ribbon affect network of 3G?

I'm having problem of screen in my N95...the screen of my mobile turn white all the time and nothing is appear in mobile screen...is that a screen ribbon problem..?

Re Nabeel: The white screen sound very similar to the problem i had with screen ribbon.
I ended up taking it to a Nokia repair centre.

sjc said...

Re Darpan Pursnani : Network issues. First best to check if you have selected Dual mode on network. So you will receive both 3G and antenna signal. 3G is the preferred signal if available.
The screen ribbon causes flashing screens, various colour distortions and even upside down display but i wouldn't expect it to effect network signals.
I would check dual mode is selected and do a soft reset if problem continues.

hey, its a new year.glad iv got the opportunity to query a thing or two. So iv got the N98 8GB, and its amazing, everythngs great though today, all of a sudden my pictures and videos disapeared. Im feeling a tad hopeful seeing the pictures iv got saved to contact numbers still appear in my phonebook, which leaves a trail of hope. This dispite the display of 'no image available' when trying to access my gallery. Iv tried soft reset. And i knw trying the hard reset would result badly.any clear directions on hw to retreive the lost photos of an entire year of my life as i am not too electronicaly inclined? Help! Also, hwcum i cant play series that iv received via bluetooth? I havnt tried downloading any though, but im sure they are suposed to work. Im using v11 software.im sure its time for an upgrade bt i have read alot of feedback on this site that it may result badly.
I honestly appreciate it.

sjc said...

Re Nabeel Babar: If i remember correctly the screen is connected to the ribbon, so it should come as one piece as shown in Final image at top of page.
I cannot guarantee it will fix your problem only that it is the most likely solution to your problem.
All the best

sjc said...

Re Anon Deleted photos:
Hopefully the phone just has a problem in locating the images and video.
To retrieve lost photos i would try:
1. Connect the phone to a pc via USB cable and select "data mode" (if available) and try to locate the images manually.
If you u can find the images folder but nothing is inside then you could try a photo retrieval software.
2. There is a software tool at Odboso PR I have not tried it myself but i does state that it can retrieve data from mobile devices.
The issue with playing movies. If you have downloaded video via WiFi or bluetooth they must be a compatible format for the phone. To play .avi files you will need divxplayer to be installed. Mp4 video should work but it needs to have correct encoding.Have a look at the Divx page
Personally i would upgrade my software via Nokia suite as it can back up the data for you.
Let me know if you still have problems :)
